Meet Refiloe Nicolas Rantekoa – The Breaad King of Soweto

Meet Refiloe Rantekoa, affectionately known as the “Bread King of Soweto.” This young entrepreneur transformed a humble side hustle into a thriving business, Borotho Bakery, which now employs 25 people.

Refiloe’s entrepreneurial journey began at the age of eight, when he started selling goods to support his family in Jabavu, Soweto. After completing his matriculation in 2008, he pursued a learnership with Bidvest and worked in the travel industry for five years. During this time, he continued to nurture his entrepreneurial spirit through various side hustles.

In 2016, when bread prices surged, Refiloe saw an opportunity to make a positive impact in his community. He founded Borotho Bakery, which translates to “bread” in Sotho. Despite initial challenges, including securing funding, Refiloe persevered and eventually secured a R50,000 bank loan.

With the loan, Refiloe set up a fully equipped bakery in his grandmother’s backyard, producing 20 loaves a day. As demand grew, so did the business. By 2017, orders reached 100 loaves a day, prompting Refiloe to expand operations to a 6-meter container and hire more staff.

Today, Borotho Bakery sells around 500 loaves daily, and has diversified its product offerings to include scones, burger buns, and hotdog rolls. Refiloe’s success has earned him numerous awards, including the Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award, Best Start-Up Business Award, and Bakery of the Year Award.

Refiloe’s story serves as a testament to the power of entrepreneurship and community-driven initiatives. His commitment to providing affordable bread to his community has not only improved lives but has also created employment opportunities and inspired a new generation of entrepreneurs.
